History

Located on the colonial Post Road, Havre de Grace was an encampment site for French and Continental troops on their March to Yorktown in September, 1781. Known as Susquehanna Lower Ferry at the time, this was a vital ferry crossing and presented a great challenge for equipment and troops fording the swift, deep river during this arduous journey. After the decisive victory at Yorktown, Havre de Grace – with its new name honoring the Revolution andour French Alliance – became a place on the map in April, 1782.
