This annual event celebrates Havre de Grace’s historic connections to Langston Hughes and honors the legacy of community members that established the Havre de Grace Colored School. Students will deliver original oratorical presentations on a theme inspired by one of the works of the poet, novelist, and playwright Langston Hughes. Hughes, a central figure in the Harlem Renaissance, was a friend and fraternity brother of the school’s Principal Leon S. Roye and was a frequent visitor to the Havre de Grace Colored School. Cash prizes are awarded to the selected finalists in both middle and high school categories as well as runners up. This inspiring program highlights the power of spoken word and the vision of youth throughout our community!
