Dance: Broadway Jazz (Grades 6-12)

This camp explodes with energy and music from modern as well as classic musicals familiar to everyone!

The story and emotional content of a musical are not only communicated through words, music, and technical aspects, but through movement and dance. Broadway Jazz introduces students to theatrical style dance reminiscent of Tony Award winning choreographers through the years that include Michael Kidd (Guys & Dolls), Jerome Robbins ( West Side Story ), Bob Fosse ( Chicago ), Jerry Mitchell (Hairspray), Susan Stroman (The Producers) and Andy Blankenbuehler (In the Heights), to name a few. A study of the works of these and other renowned choreographers will help create an appreciation of this American art form of jazz dance. Focus is on interpretation of lyrics, performance and projection. Teaching proper technique and movement quality are also emphasized. These theatrical style dances complemented by music from the award-winning scores that comprise the rich heritage of American musical theatre will be showcased at the conclusion of camp.
