Lecture: The Supreme Court Decision that Escalated the Civil War, Bounty Hunters on the Chesapeake, and the Sordid Facts Concerning the Delmarva Slave Trade

Join the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum for a lecture series detailing our permanent exhibit on the Underground Railroad in the greater Upper Chesapeake Bay region, as well as new research on the history and experience of Black watermen for a future update on our current “Working on the Bay” exhibit. Admission to the lecture series is free to the public.

Bruce Russell was the head curator on the Underground Railroad exhibit. Mr. Russell will detail the legal battle over the “ownership” of an African-American woman from the Darlington area of Harford County, that was one of the precursors to the Civil War. He will also discuss the bounty hunters, bloodhounds, and extortion exhibited.
