Nationally acclaimed, award-winning, Baltimore-born artist, painter, muralist, and educator Ernest Shaw Jr. paints narrative portraits of notable Black figures on canvas and community walls to depict and celebrate the impact of Black culture in America. His mission is to use his art to tell stories that challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about Black people, particularly Black men. He has been lauded for the huge, colorful murals adorning several buildings in Baltimore neighborhoods, celebrating and documenting history, culture, and community.
From 10 a.m. to 11:30, Mr. Shaw will conduct a workshop on portraiture, centering around the process of drawing, contour, and continuous line drawing. Through portraiture, participants will use continuous line drawing to draft self-portraits that exhibit the contour and nature of the subject. This workshop is geared to novice artists and experienced artists of all ethnicities.
From 1:00 p.m. to 2:30, Mr. Shaw will provide a fascinating lecture and slide presentation about his remarkable life and amazing career and the people, incidents, and experiences that have inspired and influenced his work.

Ernest Shaw Jr. received his BFA from Morgan State University in 2001 and his MFA from Howard University in 2005. He has completed residencies in Baltimore, MD; North Adams, MA; Saratoga Springs, NY; Key West, FLA; and Amherst, VA. He has served as Adjunct Professor at Towson State University; Maryland Institute College of Art; Coppin State University; Baltimore City Community College; and Baltimore City Public Schools. Numerous awards include the RUBY Artist Award, Robert W. Deutsch Foundation (2017); the Baker Artist Award (2021); and the Mary Sawyers Imboden Prize/Baker Artist Recipient (2022). Mr. Shaw has done solo and group exhibitions in Baltimore, in Anne Arundel County, and at the Ohio State University. His famous murals adorn buildings in Baltimore, Atlanta, New York, Newark NJ, and Colombia.
